Michelberger Hotels to open first property in Berlin
16 June 2009 GMT 10:41 (Berlin)
The Michelberger hotel group, promising “handcrafted, original spaces for the social city traveler” has announced its first hotel, designed by Werner Aisslinger, is to open in September 2009.
Founder Tom Michelberger aims to bring the “raw, rebellious and creative” qualities that have defined Berlin into the 119-room hotel, which will be located next to the famous Oberbaum Bridge and the river Spree.
Michelberger has collaborated with a patchwork of young friends to create the hotel, which aims to be a “sustainable, passionately run establishment that offers authenticity”, rather than a “cool or trendy project”.
Designer Werner Aisslinger has redesigned an old factory building from the turn of the last century, complete with period details like a clinker façade, high ceilings and massive paned windows.
Five different room categories offer a range of different layouts, including options which allow groups of four or more to share rooms.
The basic rooms feature king-sized beds on brushed larch-wood platforms, glass-walled bathrooms, free WIFI access, and flat-screen TVs running Michelberger-created loops of favourite movies and documentaries. Larger accommodations sleep up to four people, by placing “loft bed” areas above the bathrooms. The “Big One”, an 8-person loft room, is described as perfect for “a travelling band or even a business group who want to share quarters.
All rooms sport soothing grey tones and sunflower-yellow curtains, as well as custom-made wallpaper with symbols and images from the Michelberger Group’s own experiences and fantasies. Other elements have been sourced from flea markets and antique stores.
From the hotel’s façade, with it Hollywood-style marquee sign, guests enter a short corridor filled with oversized light bulbs. Courtyard, bar and restaurant areas flow into one another.. Instead of building an imposing reception desk, the Michelberger team have created an inviting circular welcome island, placed in the centre of the bar and mingle zone.
As Tom Michelberger says, “Perfection does not create memories, because memories only result from movement, from a lively experience of interaction – with people, the surroundings and the atmosphere
