Turnberry Golf Resort re-opens following US$65m refurbishment
13 July 2009 GMT 14:52 (White Plains, NY)
A major refurbishment of Turnberry by interior designers Fox Linton Associates and architects 3D Reid has been completed as it gears up to host The Open Championship 2009 from 16-19 July 2009.
The refurbishment follows a US$65 million investment by Dubai-based owners Leisurecorp, and sees the golf resort in Ayrshire, Scotland become part of Starwood Hotels & Resorts’ Luxury Collection. Renovation work has focused on the resort’s public spaces and 40 of its 211 guestrooms.
Some of the world’s leading golfers will compete on Turnberry’s Ailsa Course for this year’s Open Championship. The historic golf resort has previously played host to the world’s oldest major golf championship in 1977, 1986 and 1994.
Joe Sita, Chief Executive Officer, of Leisurecorp’s parent company Nakheel Hotels, said the upgrade of the golf course and hotel restoration programme would “restore the hotel to its rightful place as the premier property in the West of Scotland.”
Michael Wale, Senior Vice President and Director of Operations, North West Europe, Starwood Hotels & Resorts added: “The Luxury Collection is a portal to the world's most enriching and desirable destinations, where nothing less than an exceptional level of service, perfect location and indigenous personal offerings will do,”
Fox Linton Associates collaborated closely with Historic Scotland during the restoration of the 103-year-old resort. The design is a blend of “indigenous Scottish charm and contemporary luxury”, with subtle interior colours giving each room a soft, calming air inspired by the resort’s coastal setting.
“Being privileged to work on an iconic building in such a beautiful coastal setting lent inspiration to the new concept,” said Mary Fox Linton. “We wanted to pay tribute to the original design by James Miller and bring it up to date to create an ambience of contemporary luxury using a colour palate and textures that reflect the hotel’s location looking out over the Irish Sea.”
