Planning secured for Four Seasons in the City of London

12 January 2011 15:38:21 GMT

Property group Heron International has secured planning for a major hotel, residential, and retail development in the City of London, designed by two former partners of the London office of architects Kohn Pederson Fox.

The Four Seasons Hotel and Residences London at the Heron Plaza is the second, and concluding, phase of works initiated by the construction of the adjacent Heron Tower, which is nearing completion.

Heron Plaza is a masterplan devised over the last 15 years. Both phases were designed by the same architects Fred Pilbrow and Lee Polisano of PLP Architecture (previously Partners of KPF’s London office).

Heron Plaza is situated in the heart of the City of London just 150m from Liverpool Street Station, one of the biggest local and international commuter hubs in London, and mainline station for Crossrail which will open in 2017.

The Four Seasons Hotel and Residences London at Heron Plaza will occupy a  43 storey tower comprising 190 hotel suites and 120 branded residences, restaurants, state of the art conference and banqueting facilities, top quality meeting and events space, a gym, spa and swimming pool.

A plaza, at the heart of Heron Plaza, will create a new public space with luxury shops and cafes at its edges whilst retaining the most characteristic buildings on Bishopsgate and Devonshire Row, which will be renovated to form an integral part of the new development.

According to the developers, each tower has its own individual character, yet the two buildings also have many points of underlying similarity and approach. The hotel and residential tower is more private and finely scaled than the workspace of the Heron Tower, with an external screen constructed from a patinated natural copper alloy whose material tone and warmth will provide contrast and balance to the stainless steel of Heron Tower.

The two elements of the will be linked to permit energy sharing which will offer significant carbon savings to both buildings. The cost of the project will be in excess of £500 million.

Commenting, Gerald Ronson, Chief Executive of Heron International, said: “We are very pleased that the City of London has approved our plans for this second tower that will sit next to Heron Tower and complete our Heron Plaza development. With Heron Tower nearing completion and construction now well underway at The Heron, our residential development at the Barbican, this planning consent for the Four Seasons Hotel and Residences London at Heron Plaza will enable us to continue our transformation of the City of London, providing much needed, unparalleled hotel and residential facilities which reflect London’s status as the financial capital of the world.”
