Grace Leo – GLA International

Check In – Sleeper Magazine – May June 2010

Having opened seminal hotels such as The Montalembert and The Lancaster, Grace Leo has recently returned to the Parisian hotel scene with the opening of Hotel Jules and Hotel Beauchamps. She is currently working on a renovation of Vidago Palace in Portugal.

Where are we?
We have just arrived to a glass-clad version of a ryokan Japanese inn. It is located in the middle of green grassy fields with cherry blossom trees all around in full bloom.

How did you get here?
I arrived by private car – the latest model of Aston Martin.

Who are you sharing your room with?
My travelling companion resembles Robert Redford – he is suave and attentive, and treats me like a Goddess.

Is there anything you would like waiting for you in your room on arrival?
Beautiful fresh garden-cut flowers await me in the room on arrival, as well as an exquisite “still life” platter of exotic fruits. Green tea is being served discreetly by a silent butler who retires after pouring.

Who’s at the concierge desk?
The concierge turns out to be Anthony at The Ritz in London, probably the only authentic English concierge left in the profession! He is not only efficient, but very cheerful and always helpful.

And the owner / manager?
The General Manager is none other than the handsome and capable Chris Norton, whose experience spans from Far East to Far West. Chris gives his guests undivided attention, making them feel unique and special.

Describe the hotel building, your room and the view...
The main hotel building is a two-storey structure with very high ceilings. It feels like a sophisticated private home to a wealthy and well-travelled connoisseur. The walls are full of refined and rare objects and art pieces, which are part of a vast collection accumulated by the owner who is an avid collector. Even though the architecture dates back to the 19th century, the interiors have a contemporary feel with antiques and modern furnishings. My suite is in a separate pavilion. It is entirely enclosed in the ‘dernier cri’ in high-tech glass which is capable of changing colours and becoming frosted to protect guests from being seen when desired. It allows the guests to feel at one with nature. Here, I can meditate while admiring the pink blossoms from the cherry trees outside. The furnishings are tastefully appointed, in muted colours of blush and pearl grey. There’s a thick cashmere throw on the bed with fur trim and an adjusta fireplace in the salon area of the suite, the flame is adjustable and provides the warmth on a chilly spring evening.

Who designed it?
The hotel has been designed by a descendent of the last Empress of China. This is how she would like to live.

What’s the restaurant / bar like?
The restaurant is very intimate, sophisticated but comfortable, only 35 covers with tables and chairs which are like small niches, designed for couples dining. One can have a conversation without having the neighbours hear you, yet the guests can see one another discreetly. The bar has a more masculine, warm, darker atmosphere, with low seating and leather, stone, and bronze used for the décor. There is a wonderful selection of whiskies and cognacs.

Who’s manning the stoves?
A team of Asian chefs are manning the open kitchen.

And what’s on the menu?
Starter: Fresh sashimi and assorted salads
Main: Sliced meat and fish cooked in a broth with vegetables
Dessert: Sago pudding with coconut milk and mango

Would you like something to drink with that?
Dinner is accompanied with a crisp cold French Chablis wine.

What CDs would like in your room?
Soft Brazilian music and jazz.

And a book at bedtime?
My bedtime book is the latest thriller from Dan Brown.

What’s in the mini-bar for a night cap?
The nightcap is already poured when we arrive back at our suite – two glasses of Cognac XO to be consumed in front of the fireplace.

Would you like a newspaper or magazine in the morning?
My preferred newspaper whilst travelling is either the International Herald Tribune or the New York Times.

What toiletries would you like to freshen up with?
A skincare line from Orlane.
