3XN design two-tower extension to Copenhagen Exhibition venue to create Scandinavia’s largest hotel
Danish architects 3XN have designed a new landmark hotel extension of the Bella Congress Center in Copenhagen. When complete it is expected to be the largest hotel in Scandinavia.
The exhibition venue is situated between the traditional city centre and the growing district of Orestad, at Amager island. 3XN has provided a masterplan for the entire area to establish the right site for the two-tower hotel.
The plan draws upon the classical urban weave of rectangular streets and blocks, but leaves each field open to interpretation.
“The upgrade of Bella Center will add an urban feeling to the place, and the extension will immediately benefit from Bella Center’s perfect location,” say 3XN.
”The two hotel towers stand close as a pair, yet seem a little shy. The towers incline in opposite directions, with façades breaking off during the rise. In this way, variation, a dynamic shape, and an unobstructed view of the green meadows and the sea from all rooms in both towers are obtained.”
The proximity of Copenhagen Airport meant flight safety regulations imposed a maximum tower height of 75m (23 floors).
Wind considerations as well as aesthetics have prompted the top twist of one tower, while the ground floor twist of the other tower allows for a clearly indicated entrance. The hotel lobby merges into the existing entrance lobby of the Bella Center. The 814-guestroom hotel will have a strong business focus, offering 32 new meeting rooms – including a large ballroom – to complement the Bella Center’s existing conference rooms and auditoria. Two executive rooms on the 23rd floor will be connected to a sky bar. There will also be an 850m2 spa and fitness centre.
Construction began in August 2008 and is due for completion in 2011.
Arne Bang Mikkelsen, CEO at Bella Center, said Bella Center, as well as being the developer, were also hoping to operate the hotel themselves.
