London-based Based Upon has announced the launch of Studio Based Upon, a new service dedicated to the A&D community, alongside the debut of its inaugural (Pre)Crafted panel collection.

Founded in 2004 by twin brothers lan and Richard Abell, with artist Alex Welch, Based Upon has long operated beyond conventional categories, moving fluidly between fine art, collectible design and material innovation. Over the past twenty years, the studio has become known for its pioneering work with liquid metal, semi- precious resins such as Tramazite, and richly layered surface finishes, collaborating with architects and designers on commissions spanning ultra-luxury hotels and private residences, to palaces and yachts.

Studio Based Upon provides direct access to the studio’s creative pioneers, master makers and extensive archive of materials and forms. The service incorporates concept development, detailed design and engineering, through to final fabrication.

At the centre of Studio Based Upon’s launch is (Pre) Crafted, a collection of hand-made panels that distil two decades of material innovation into a refined offering designed for spatial transformation. Conceived to be experienced at scale, the panels form continuous, flowing installations, composed of vast, unrepeated surfaces that allow entire spaces to be defined by bespoke architectural purity.
Drawing on the studio’s long-standing alchemical relationship with material, the panels respond dynamically to light. Subtle shifts in tone and depth emerge throughout the day, from natural daylight to controlled artificial illumination, giving each surface multiple expressions within a single installation.

The (Pre) Crafted panels are available in two sizes of 3200mmx1200mm and 2400mmx1200mm, and four finishes: Gold, Bronze, Pink Nickel and Silver. Additional colourways and textures are scheduled for release later this year.

All work is designed and fabricated in the studio’s London workshop, where large-scale integrated artworks, architectural features and surfaces are realised through intricate craftsmanship at an epic scale.
