Azuma Farm Koiwai, a boutique nature retreat developed by Azumi Japan and East Japan Railway Company, is set to open in Shizukuishi.

Slated to open in 2026, the intimate countryside escape is set within the storied grounds of Koiwai Farm in Iwate Prefecture, one of Japan’s most historic farmstead landscapes.

The retreat is the first destination under the newly launched Azuma Farm brand, which embraces a way of living centred on harmony with land, seasons, food and community. At the Koiwai outpost, this philosophy shapes the retreat’s design, culinary approach and deep integration with the surrounding environment.

Envisioned by Shiro Miura of Kyoto-based firm Rokkakuya, the retreat’s architecture and design are rooted in nature, rural heritage, mindful living and the coexistence of people and the natural landscape.

The farm stay experience and farm life philosophy culminate in the retreat’s garden and forest villas in a way that compliment Azumi Japan’s previous coastal focus of their flagship hotel Azumi Setoda. Under the guidance of Chairman Adrian Zecha, Azumi Japan offers a new approach to luxury hospitality, seeking to preserve Japanese traditions while reinterpreting these elements in a modern era.

Azuma Farm represents a wholly separate vision. The concept explores a different cultural lens, one rooted in nature, rural heritage, and mindful living, to offer an elevated farm-stay experience that complements, rather than parallels, the coastal sensibility of Azumi.
