Eric Egan and Hirsch Bedner Associates’ Castel Monastero makeover nears completion

Formerly known as Monastero dell’Ombrone, this small village was once home to the noble Chigi Saracini family of Siena and has survived intact since the 11th century.

Together with a team of Italian artisans, both Egan and HBA have been guided by the philosophy of creating a real sense of place with a well-designed and integrated sense of opulence and calm.

Castel Monastero provides spectacular views of vineyards, olive groves and the Estate’s ancient castle from every angle.  The resort’s 76 guestrooms and suites are located amongst the renovated houses of the old village; these, along with the Estate’s private villa, pay reverence to the rustic style and harmony of ancient Tuscany, combining restored and conserved antiques, recuperated building materials alongside contemporary furniture and technology.

Many of the rooms feature tempura frescoed walls behind the wood panelled beds.  The lamps are based on designs by Wilfried Edouard Bouquet while the oversized Vulcan stone bathrooms are fitted with custom made broad rain showerheads.  Kaldewei baths and Zuchetti fittings, together with swathes of sumptuous Rubelli fabrics, feature throughout the property softening the austere stone.
