Q&A: Dornbracht celebrates 75th anniversary at Milan Design Week with Atelier launch
As fittings manufacturer Dornbracht prepares to celebrate its 75th anniversary, the brand’s CEO Caroline Schmitt discusses the milestone and its Milan Design Week showcase including its newest launch, Dornbracht Atelier.
How has Dornbracht evolved over the past 75 years?
From its early years, Dornbracht has been characterised by quality in design, function and manufacturing. These are the foundations that we still build on today and we have always been proud of sustainable manufacture in Germany and responsible use of our products. The period from 1990 to 2010 brought a focus on inspiration for architecture and interior design; we participated in cultural and research projects and immersed ourselves in the idea of rituals and zoning of the bathroom. Through this, our understanding of how the bathroom and kitchen were being used as living spaces grew. Many of the iconic designs we launched within this period look as good today as they did back then – Tara and MEM are two examples of fittings which are timeless and offer examples of quality craftsmanship which stands the test of time.
As we moved towards 2020, there was a natural progression into the effect of water. The bathroom became a place of wellness, and the health benefits of water were further developed based on evidence. Our latest showering launches, Aquahalo and Serenity Sky, bear testament to the belief we have as a brand that water has a direct impact on how we feel, whether that is energising ourselves for the day, refreshing ourselves post work-out or winding down before rest and sleep. Today, these years of experience and evolution come together in our new brand claim, ‘Inspiring your vision’. We are committed to individual needs being our focus through iconic design, tailor-made solutions, fascinating water experiences and outstanding quality as key factors.
How is Dornbracht commemorating the anniversary at Milan Design Week?
During Milan Design Week, we proudly look back on our history and celebrate 75 years of pioneering innovations, iconic design, advanced technologies; 75 years underpinned with the craftsmanship and expertise we nurture at Dornbracht. We place so much value in the talent and skills of our makers which has been tried and trusted for generations, as well as our relationship with our design house Sieger Design, which spans 40 years. At the same time, we celebrate our drive to keep breaking new ground. Our fresh claim “Inspiring your vision” sends a strong signal for the future. With huge respect and admiration for what has gone before, we are now focusing on our strength to create solutions that are as individual as the people we design them for.
What can visitors expect from your MDW showcase?
In our showroom in the middle of Brera, we are showcasing Dornbracht Atelier, our new business segment which turns visions into reality. The heart of our presentation is unlimited creative freedom. Visitors will participate in a highly personal brand experience that not only surprises but inspires and invites them to explore varying dimensions of self-realisation. This experience starts in the entrance to our showroom where visitors will find an abstract, visual installation that demonstrates the breadth of design possibilities. After that, we invite them to be guided on a path of discovery into what inspires them. One-of-a-kind fittings finished in leather, velvet and eggshells or handles made from warm wood and hammered metals – the examples we have on display in our showroom will create a tactile sensation.
What is Dornbracht Atelier?
Dornbracht Atelier is the ultimate in individualisation, creating tailored solutions starting at one piece. From truly unique design forms to customised handles with new materials, unique engravings or customised dimensions, we invite designers to consider that anything is possible and challenge the way we look at water delivery. With Dornbracht Atelier, there is no standard solution anymore.
Why did you decide to launch Dornbracht Atelier?
For 75 years, our x-tra service has provided bespoke solutions, building not only tremendous in-house expertise in design and manufacturing but also a network of partners who share our deep understanding of luxury. We see the demand to take this to a whole new level. The trend for personalisation has continued to grow, and it was a logical step for us to build on this legacy and elevate bespoke design to new heights with Dornbracht Atelier.
What can Dornbracht Atelier offer developers, architects and designers?
It offers these creative minds maximum freedom to express their own style and ideas – with unique, unmistakable solutions which pull focus and become a talking point in a project. The possibilities are limitless, and we offer an inexhaustible platform of experimentation for innovations, working with new and unusual materials, finishes, production techniques, and shapes. One example I can draw on is a truly unique fitting which has been designed as a swan. Its wings pull forwards and back to offer flow controls and the curve of the spout is reminiscent of its graceful long neck. We also created a bathroom fitting finished with reclaimed feathers which would otherwise have been thrown away.
How is Dornbracht Atelier suitable for hospitality spaces?
It offers a solution for individual needs and requirements, creating a piece which reflects brand values and offers guests something special and luxurious that no other space can provide. Dornbracht Atelier creates true one-offs which stand apart from the crowd. It is important to say that it isn’t just about the inspirational and highly creative, we can also support with simple challenges that we know hoteliers and wider hospitality space encounter. Whether an aesthetic, technical or structural issue, we can provide a solution which is tailor-made.
What does the next 75 years hold for Dornbracht?
We look forward to the next phase of business for the brand and couldn’t be prouder of the foundations we stand on. We will continue to be humbled by our rich heritage while innovating to inspire our customers.
