Stellar Works on show at Design Museum

Contemporary furniture manufacturer Stellar Works has installed a special exhibition at London’s Design Museum as part of the city-wide London Design Festival.

Conceptualised by Stellar Work’s Creative Directors Neri & Hu, the showcase – entitled Indigo: A Cultural Iconography reveals how the ancient dying technique is transformed into a contemporary manufacturing process.

The installation features Stellar Work’s Ming chair, which draws on the past to inspire the present.

Stellar Works has been exploring the use of indigo, once widespread in Japan and China, and has collaborated with textile technology brand The Fabrick Lab to perfect the application of indigo in furniture, as traditionally it is only applied to fabric.

The first iteration of this experimentation with indigo was with Brooklyn-based Crème / Jun Aizaki, that saw an installation of Indigo Exchange chairs showcased during ICFF.

The Stellar Works technique merges modern manufacturing systems with age-old materials, and craft artistry to create a piece that while modern in form, is steeped in tradition.
