Set to launch in Spring 2021, AB Concept – appointed by Nozul Hotels & Resorts – has designed W Algarve Hotel & Residences.

The property consists of 124 guestrooms, 12 hotel residences and 83 private residences, all located on the central Algarve coast. Known for its beautiful beaches and local crafts, AB Concept took inspiration from the region for the interior design.

The project marks the twelfth year of partnership between the studio and the W Hotel Group, who have collaborated on numerous properties across continents. W Algarve is also significant as AB Concept’s first resort commission outside of Asia.

Built around a central water feature, the rooms and residences are accompanied by a fitness centre, a spa, and eateries including Market Kitchen – inspired by local Portuguese markets – and Paper Moon, which boasts panoramic views and a calming colour scheme.

The site is designed to take guests on a journey of discovery and cultural immersion, taking cues from Portuguese culture and exuding a modern, Mediterranean sensibility.

As with every AB Concept project, the studio draws upon local heritage incorporating architectural and craft elements from the surrounding area and reinterpreting them in a contemporary way. In this instance, using local stone throughout and working alongside Portuguese craft studios to create unique crochet and mosaic pieces, pottery and ceramics for the space.

“W is a very narrative-driven hotel group and each project is a different chapter of the story,” comments Ed Ng, Co-Founder of AB Concept. “Every time we design a W Hotel we seek to immerse ourselves in the local culture and interpret it through our design, in line with the brand. The word Algarve to me, means immaculate blue sky, the sweet ocean breeze, and the ‘sculpture-like’ seascape. Nature has so much to offer, so this was crucial to our vision of the site, alongside the local culture.”
