Canopy by Hilton opens first UK property

Hilton has opened the first UK property under its sustainable lifestyle hotel brand, Canopy by Hilton.

Situated in the multi-million pound Minories development in the heart of London’s East End, Canopy by Hilton London City is ideally located in close proximity to leading attractions such as the Tower of London and is just a five-minute walk from Aldgate Tube Station.

The 340-key hotel offers a range of guestrooms in addition to 35 top-floor suites with city views. In keeping with the brand’s ambitions to create properties that exist almost as natural extensions of their neighbourhoods, the hotel sources the majority of its F&B from local suppliers and provides complementary bikes to guests wanting to explore the area.

Also steeped in local culture is the hotel’s design, created in collaboration with UK-based architecture and design firm, ACME. Interiors feature rich woven fabrics inspired by the East End’s historic textile industry, with floral patterning in the guestrooms and common spaces reminiscent of techniques used by Huguenot silk weavers who settled in Spitalfields in the 17th Century. Artwork created by neighbourhood artists adorn the hotel’s public spaces as a nod to Whitechapel’s thriving arts scene.

The hotel also offers amenities including a 24-hour fitness centre and a range of F&B options. Specialty restaurant, Penny Squares, offers East End-inspired dishes made with local ingredients. At the heart of the hotel, Freedom Café serves craft coffee, cocktails and a selection of drinks from local wineries, distilleries and breweries. Lastly, the hotel’s rooftop terrace is set to open Florattica in early 2022, providing a spot for drinks and small plates set against a backdrop of city views.

In keeping with Hilton’s Travel with Purpose 2030 Goals to double its social impact investments and halve its environmental footprint, the hotel opens with a BREEAM VERY GOOD sustainability rating – the highest possible within its building category. These initiatives can be seen in the hotel’s acquisition of an existing building rather than constructing a new build; its green rooftop space featuring solar panels; its Building Management System reducing energy waste from lighting and air conditioning; and the use of sustainable materials to make the beds, toiletries and plastic-free bottles throughout the hotel.

Following the brand’s recent openings in Paris and Madrid, the hotel joins a growing portfolio of over 30 properties worldwide, which is set to double in coming years.

“Canopy by Hilton continues to expand its presence across Europe with recent openings in Paris and Madrid, and we’re thrilled to be bringing the brand to London – one of the most dynamic cities in the world,” comments Simon Vincent, Executive Vice President and EMEA President of Hilton. “With Hilton set to open 30 hotels in the UK in the next five years, Canopy by Hilton London City is a stunning new addition to Hilton’s lifestyle portfolio and symbolises our commitment to providing exceptional accommodation in the very best global destinations.”

Phil Cordell, Global Head of Canopy by Hilton, summarises: “Canopy by Hilton is all about championing local neighbourhoods – and what better place for its UK debut than the vibrant East End of London. With its rich textile history and thriving arts scene, the surrounding area provides no end of inspiration for this incredible hotel, and we can’t wait to welcome guests to experience everything it has to offer.”

“We are pleased to expand our portfolio with Hilton to open the first Canopy by Hilton hotel in the UK,” adds Neil Taylor, Chief Operating Officer of 4C Hotel Group. “Convenience and quality are at the core of our business; we carefully select hotels that are perfectly located in major key cities, so our customers have easy access to major tourist attractions. This hotel is the perfect collaboration for us, with an incredible location right in the heart of London’s buzzing East End.”
