Tulum Treehouse joins Design Hotels

A private jungle retreat in the dense mangrove vegetation of Tulum, near Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve, has joined the Design Hotels Portfolio.

Nestled amongst a swaying sea of lush emerald palms, the Tulum Treehouse is a private home located a stone’s throw from the heart of Tulum.

The five-bedroom property has been created by Tulum-based architecture studio Co-Lab Design Office in collaboration with interior designer Annabell Kutucu, and encompasses an organic design that protects the region’s bio-dynamically rich environment.

To create a deeply rooted connection to the natural world, the Treehouse relies on full solar setup with a back-up generator, as well as a two-pronged water treatment and irrigation system to help preserve the fragile ecosystem that is the Tulum jungle and mangrove area.

Interior features comprise large common areas, several spacious wrap-around terraces, and multiple spaces for indoor living, whilst hammocks and outdoor showers invite guests to connect with the treetops.

Bringing a global aesthetic to the project, upcycled furniture from Jorge and Rita, a local family of carpenters, handwoven baskets by Rosalinda, individually crafted Oaxacan ceramics by La Chicharra, and textiles by Mexican label Caravana sit in harmony against a polished concrete canvas.

Light and air flow through tranquil rooms appointed by Oaxacan rugs and bespoke furnishings by Meridian artisans, or sourced from Mexico City’s weekend antique market. Amenities are a labour of love by Lolita Lolita, a Tulum-based all-natural line specializing in organic skin care, body oils, hair care, and other aromatic products.

“After years in the region, learning about the local craftspeople talent, it was our idea to pair them with international design knowledge and aesthetics to create a one-of-a-kind reinterpretation of jungle living,” comments Juan Pablo Heredia, partner of Tulum Treehouse.

Through a flexible design concept, the house can be rented with only three bedrooms, or as a five-bedroom accommodation. Taken as a whole, this haven is a place to change the pace of life, to reset, to create space, nurture silence, and reconnect.
