Herons Lodge

Herons Lodge sets sights on spring opening

Herons Lodge by Common Thread Hotels is set to open its doors in Carmel-by-the-Sea in April 2026, featuring interiors by Nina Freudenberger of Freudenberger Design Studio.

Loosely interpreted as a sister property to Sparrows Lodge, with a complementary air of innate style, an authentic approach to hospitality and an acute appreciation for the Carmel neighborhood, the property marks the second in the California-based brand’s portfolio to be designed by Freudenberger, who previously delivered White Water in Cambria alongside the Common Thread Hotels team.

The 35-key hotel will be set among two storeys in the centre of Carmel-by-the-Sea’s downtown core. Within, the space will feature a welcoming lobby rooted in relaxed-coastal sophistication with rustic woods, soft neutrals and organic textures surrounding a central indoor/outdoor bar, which will feature local wines, craft beers, cocktails and an artisan boutique full of curated sundries.

From there, an expansive outdoor courtyard will be anchored by Terremoto LA landscaping, firepits, water features and various lounge and seating areas. A guest-exclusive menu of small bites and snacks will feature locally sourced favourites for dining in-room, in the lounge or takeaway picnics.

Guestrooms, ranging in size from a King Room to a One Bedroom suite, are bespoke in every way, with all custom furnishings, cabinetry and millwork by Freudenberger Design Studio, complemented by fabrics and textiles by Zak and Fox and Christopher Farr, Brazilian and Japanese tiles and imported light fixtures. Many rooms also feature fireplaces.

Meanwhile, a palette of warm, earthy tones and rich textures is designed to feel both nostalgic and new, inspiring travellers who seek an environment with a story, and is rooted in the free-spirited energy of the 70’s and the timeless beauty of Carmel.
