Hotel Gotham to open in April 2015

80 years after the opening of the original building, Hotel Gotham is set to open its doors at 100 King Street, Manchester.

Edward Lutyens designed the building in 1928, with construction finising in 1935. It has now been restored and transformed from its banking past, into the handsome 60-key Hotel Gotham.

The architecture of the King of King Street provided natural inspiration for the nostalgic, yet decadent design direction. The design of the new bedrooms features wonderful travel trunk-style cocktails cabinets and wardrobes. Burnished metals teamed with dark polished woods and luxurious leather are coupled with plum and raspberry, while soft velvet and faux fur are used liberally. Subtle nods are made to the banking past with money-bag style laundry bags.

The hotel is spread over seven floors, with 60 guestrooms. The reception and restaurant occupy the sixth floor, with a striking bar occupying the seventh floor. The hotel will also include five inner sanctum suites.

Internal restoration includes the reincarnation of the main staircase, balustrades, mouldings and terrazzo flooring. Original glazed tiles from the once central light well add an interesting backdrop to the core of the bar, where guests will sense a connection to the hotel’s past as a bank. Leather satchel briefcase lights, bowler hat displays, green glass and bankers lamps all pay homage to the original function of the building.

Geometric carpets run throughout, and dramatic windows surrounding the windows are dressed with full-length elegant curtains, offering views across the city of Manchester.

The bar and restaurant, Brass and Honey, continue the theme and colourways, promising the mysterious and enticing. Menus and cocktails will reflect the art deco heritage, featuring local suppliers and tastes.

Lead designer, Oliver Redfern concluded: “We wanted to pay tribute to a major building designed by “one of the greatest Britsh architects”, Edwin Lutyens, whilst injecting a distinct fresh personality. We hope our guests will have as much fun at Hotel Gotham as we have had in creating it.”
