Hotel Schgaguler undergoes refurbishment

Hotel Schgaguler, a ski resort located in the heart of the Dolomites, has undergone an extensive reconstruction by Peter Pichler Architecture. Originally built in 1986, the property is nestled in the small village of Castelrotto in Alto Adige, Northern Italy – known for his folkloric culture and the relationship with its nature and surrounding mountains.

A simple and timeless architectural design has been the main protagonist of the boutique hotel; Alpine style with pared back aesthetics creates an authentic sense of wellbeing, while an open and transparent house structure deepens the connection to the picturesque area and its surrounding mountains. The project consists of three monolithic volumes, each of which follows the original building before reconstruction. Respecting its local context and surroundings, the strong architectural identity of the hotel follows a contemporary reinterpretation of the alpine style and plays with vernacular elements including the typical sloped roof.

The expressive exoskeleton façade also changes according to orientation and programme. At the north-east façade, comprising mostly corridors and public spaces, the almost sculptural structure features less depth, while at the south façade the tapered geometry has more depth and creates loggias with natural shading. Furthermore, the bright grey colour of the chalk containing the render of the façade is inspired by the rocks of the encircling mountains.

Tradition and culture are key elements in the design of the hotel; simple and functional interiors with open layouts are combined with local materials such as chestnut wood or local stones and textiles. Public spaces like the lobby, restaurant and bar are located on the ground floor, the latter connecting to a terrace with impressive views towards the Sciliar mountain. Downstairs, the underground level houses the wellness facilities, spa and beauty treatment rooms.

Meanwhile, guestrooms and suites are located in the upper levels of the structure and are characterised by timeless design that evokes a cosy atmosphere. Completing the offer, open bathrooms with free-standing bathtubs invite guests for a dip after a hike or ski tour.
