InterContinental Hotels Group has announced that InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland is expected to open its doors in Q4 of 2018. Developed by Shimao Group the luxury hotel is set mostly below ground in a deep former quarry pit in South-Western Shanghai.

The 18-storey hotel has two floors above ground and 16 below, including two floors underwater. With a construction area of more than 61,000m² the hotel comprises 336 guestrooms and suites, all with balconies, affording views of the surrounding waterfalls and cliffs.

In contrast to the traditional architectural concept of building high-rises, InterContinental Shanghai Wonderland reaches 88m below ground, with the project’s design seeking to reshape the relationship between city and nature.
