London-based Lupoi Design Studio (LDS) has unveiled its interiors for Urbana, a new Tribute Portfolio by Marriott hotel in Rione Monti, Rome.

Housed within Villino Costanzi, a grand 19th-century residence designed by Koch Architects, the hotel will pay homage to the city’s architectural heritage through classical detailing and preserved frescoes.

The central design theme, explored by LDS, is inspired by the nearby ancient Roman pathway known as Malum Punicum – the road of the pomegranate. Much like the fruit’s dual nature – a tough exterior concealing a multitude of vibrant seeds – the hotel merges the trendy allure of Rione Monti with the formal elegance of 19th-century Rome. The motif is carried throughout, from a sculptural reception desk inspired by the pomegranate seed to a courtyard garden designed around newly created open space.

In Urbana, LDs have incorporated sculptural elements in the form of a theatrical play of volumes, a modern interpretation of Roman columns, with light and shadow dancing across stone floors – particularly evident in the newly created Lounge. Beyond the 64 guestrooms and suites, the hotel will feature two eateries, a gym, wellness area, and a rooftop bar offering panoramic views.

Creative Director Massimo Barbera explains: “Just as this revered fruit is celebrated for its abundance and prosperity, the hotel seeks to encapsulate layers of richness waiting to be uncovered.”
