Mazzarò Sea Palace – part of the VRetreats collection – is set to reopen in Summer 2026 following an extensive redesign by architecture and design studio De.Tales.

Overlooking the Bay of Mazzarò in Taormina along Sicily’s eastern coast, the hotel exhibits sweeping views of the Ionian coastline under the silent presence of Mount Etna.

Its 2026 redesign marks a new chapter for the property, elevating it into a contemporary Mediterranean retreat rooted in place, craftsmanship and refined hospitality.

De.Tales’ comprehensive redesign translates local traditions into a contemporary design language defined by soft forms and fluid spatial connections. Locally sourced materials, bespoke furnishings, and curated lighting accentuate the property’s textures and spatial flow. Sicilian artwork and ceramic craftsmanship add cultural depth throughout all the property’s restaurants and the 70 rooms and suites – six of which include private pools. The resort also offers a panoramic pool and wellness centre.

The redesigned Reception area invites guests into the hotel’s renewed identity with openness, light and rich materials. Designed to reveal the sea beyond, it features a radial floor pattern echoed in the furnishings and walls, three-dimensional finishes that suggest water’s movement, and a custom wool and silk rug inspired by organic forms. A sculptural reception desk with a lava stone top and hand-woven blue leather detailing anchors the space, while layered lighting adds a soft, atmospheric glow.

In the guestrooms, vaulted ceilings frame intimate sleeping alcoves, while outside, expansive terraces with uninterrupted sea views reinforce the constant relationship between interior and exterior living – central to the studio’s vision. Materials and furnishings reflect the island’s natural and artisanal heritage.

Neutral tones inspired by sand and sun-bleached stone are paired with deep blues recalling the sea and volcanic landscape. Bespoke ceramic and lava stone elements, featured in wardrobes and writing desks, celebrate local craftsmanship, lending each room a serene, timeless character.

The story continues throughout the hotel’s F&B offering. Outdoors, the panoramic Velvet Terrace unfolds as an elegant yet relaxed setting where soft tones, green hues, Palladiana flooring and teak decking define lounge and dining zones. The space is finished with lime-plastered walls, custom ceramics and modular furnishings.

Meanwhile, Almarè Bar becomes a coastal-inspired meeting space which blends Sicilian tradition with modern detail. A fluid, layered ceiling installation creates a sense of light and motion.

Armònia Restaurant is a seamless indoor-outdoor space defined by soft curves and Mediterranean warmth. Highlights include ribbed wood boiserie, custom ceramic art, and bespoke wallpaper. The area features a striking blue interior that opens toward the sea view.

Finally, Blum Restaurant is the hotel’s more intimate, atmospheric indoor setting centred on marine textures. Custom furnishings include blue-toned lava stone tables paired with light, natural seating for a refined finish.
