Derby-based architect studio Morrison Design has completed the refurbishment of The Sloane Club, a historic private members’ club in Chelsea.
Led by architects Peter Newman-Earp and Les Witten, the club – housed within a 19th-century building in a conservation area – has been reimagined for a new generation of members while preserving its character, creating a space that feels fresh and modern but still rooted in its history.
One of the project’s key focuses was the terrace; previously little more than a courtyard with awnings, it was usable only in good weather. Morrison Design created an all-year-round space that is airy, light and inviting, with an expanded F&B offering.

“We wanted to maximise the open space and create something timeless, with clean, uncluttered lines,” Witten explains. “The structure dictated a lot of the architecture – it was a challenging space but the result feels effortless.” Newman-Earp adds: “It adapts to different moods and functions, making it the social heartbeat of the club.”
Morrison Design also opened up the reception area to create a more welcoming arrival, and an alcove in the reception lounge with a fireplace creates a warm and inviting atmosphere. A wellness suite with a gym and treatment rooms, alongside accessible lifts and flexible guestroom layouts, are also features of the transformation.

Reflecting on the project, Witten states: “The terrace is brilliant – flexible, uplifting and now the hub of the club.” Newman-Earp adds: “The whole club feels more atmospheric and theatrical. Everything has fallen into place beautifully.”
Each of the distinct, characterful spaces at The Sloane Club now work together to create a cohesive, modern and welcoming identity.
