Nine Orchard set for NYC’s Lower East Side

Opening this Spring, Nine Orchard is a new hotel and culinary destination in downtown New York. Located at the intersection of Chinatown and the Lower East Side, the former Jarmulowsky bank has been carefully restored by DLJ Real Estate Capital Partners, blending historic architecture with contemporary design and art.

Originally built in 1912 as the second location of Rabbi Sender Jarmulowsky’s banking business, the 83,000ft², 14-floor property had been left empty since 2006. DLJ has worked closely with a team of collaborators to preserve the building’s character throughout, from its facade to its metalwork and millwork, with the aim of honouring the structure’s intrinsic beauty and returning a significant landmark to the neighbourhood.

Outside, the building’s original clock and 60-foot-tall tempietto on the rooftop have been sensitively recreated from old photographs and re-erected. The lobby features a vaulted ceiling and large, arched windows; here, where bank tellers once worked, guests can check-in, lounge and enjoy a coffee or drink.

The 116 guestrooms are decidedly simple and quiet, with character infused in the details and craftsmanship. Subdued materials are coupled with bespoke fixtures, restored mouldings and large windows that showcase vistas of the surrounding neighbourhood. Three suites offer private brick-paved terraces with city views.

Upon joining the Lower East Side, Nine Orchard welcomed collaboration from friends and neighbours in the community, with bespoke contributions seen throughout, from the art that hangs in every room to the curated mini bars, the bathroom amenities and the custom sound system. “I know I’m not alone in believing the Lower East Side is one of the most creative and dynamic areas in the city,” says Andy Rifkin, Managing Partner of DLJ. “We hope Nine Orchard can serve as a hub for those nearby, as well as an inspiring home-away-from-home for visitors. I’m grateful to all of our friends and neighbours who helped make it happen.”

For its food-and-beverage programme, Nine Orchard has partnered with Ignacio Mattos of Mattos Hospitality on multiple restaurants, event spaces and the hotel’s room-service offering. Additional details to follow.
