French interior design studio Pierre-Yves Rochon (PYR) has reimagined the guestrooms and suites at Four Seasons Hotel Milano

Opening its doors in 1933 on Via Gesù, the former 15th-century convent was the brand’s first property in continental Europe. Now, PYR has redesigned the hotel’s 118 rooms to pay homage to Milanese design and history, while maintaining a balance between heritage and modernity.

Founder Pierre-Yves Rochon renovated the rooms and suites to honour the legacy of the historic address while giving it a new life for modern day travellers. “In Milan, we wanted to celebrate the great tradition of Italian design, characterised by proper proportions, balance and authentic materials,” he explains. “Here, nothing is superfluous: every element naturally finds its place, serving comfort and beauty.”

The accommodation interiors stand out for their contemporary interpretation of local heritage, an identity reinforced through collaborations with Poliform and Rubelli.

At the core of the redesign is the material palette – textured velvet, brass finishes and graphic bookshelves create a balanced dialogue. Colour block harmonies express modernity, while selected tones naturally integrate with the building’s history; inspired by the cloister’s frescoes, the terracotta and grey-blue shades envelop the rooms in a soft and coherent atmosphere, enhancing the unity between private and public spaces, which were designed by Patricia Urquiola in 2021.

Design details include the original marble in the bathrooms – which has been preserved and enhanced through redesigned sinks – as well as custom-made carpentry, crafted in rosewood and fine leather in a bid to continue the local artisanal tradition. Technology also blends with design through discreet home automation and furniture with studied proportions.

The specialty suites capture the atmosphere of a Milanese home through their character, design and spaciousness. Among these is the Fresco Suite, with a preserved fresco on the ceiling painted by Giocondo Albertolli (1742–1839).

The Renaissance Suite, meanwhile, with its open studio-style layout and abundance of natural light thanks to the garden view, has a large canopy bed and features an original Renaissance stucco ceiling.

In addition to these, Four Seasons Hotel Milano offers five suites with separate living and sleeping areas or a spacious single area, and different types of rooms for a personalised stay.
