Room Mate reveals Barcelona hotel

Room Mate Hotels has announced a third design hotel in Barcelona, Room Mate Carla.

With interiors designed by Tomás Alía, the property will be located a few steps from the Paseo de Gracia on Calle Mallorca, one of the city’s prime shopping and business areas.

The 81-room property aims to honour the city’s architectural history, and in line with Barcelona’s design traditions, it incorporates the influences of industrial themes, ceramics, celebrated trencadis mosaics, and Gaudí’s modernism, as well as reflecting the cosmopolitan aspects and urban development that the city has experienced over the last four decades.

Notable eye catching features include a large vertical structure at the front desk made up of dozens of enamelled ceramic pieces, all handcrafted by traditional methods, adding a sense of space. The lobby colour scheme is a mix of bold blue, silver and taupe with armchairs and sofas in striking geometric shapes designed exclusively for the hotel.

Guestrooms focus on comfort, with a design scheme consisting of pared-down white interiors and furniture. Meanwhile contrasting bright colours and bold shapes feature on raised headboards, walls and rugs.

Alía comments: “It’s always a pleasure to work with Room Mate Hotels because this is a group that likes to be innovative and break the mould; from a design perspective, we have the freedom to create our own projects.” Alía has previously worked with the brand on properties such as Room Mate Oscar, Madrid and Room Mate Aitana, Amsterdam.

A fourth opening in Barcelona by Room Mate Hotels is expected in late summer 2016. Room Mate Anna, designed by Lorenzo Castillo, will be located at the intersection of Calle Aragón and Paseo de Gracia, and offer 81 rooms, and will act as the brand’s flagship.
