San Montano Resort & Spa has debuted its refreshed interiors and a new private villa following the completion of the first phase of a two-part renovation.

The 65-room luxury retreat on Italy’s island of Ischia – which offers sweeping views of the Bay of Naples, stretching all the way to Mount Vesuvius – originally opened its doors in 2008 by the De Siano family.

Now, it welcomes back guests with newly designed suites, refreshed public spaces throughout the main building and pool deck and its new signature Lighthouse Suite.

The renovation pays homage to Italy’s rich design legacy, incorporating elements from postwar masters like Gio Ponti and Ico Parisi, while embracing hyperlocal craftsmanship and the surrounding Mediterranean landscape.

Designed by Rino Gambardella and Claudio Pulicati, San Montano’s renovation focuses on locally sourced materials, warm natural fabrics and a colour palette that harmonises with Ischia’s lush natural scenery.

With artisanal touches such as bespoke furnishings made from reclaimed and repurposed antique majolica tiles, the property’s refreshed design blends the heritage of the island with modern sophistication.

The newly updated guest accommodations embrace the deep blue colour palette of the Mediterranean paired with modern, clean finishings crafted from marble and terracotta, alongside custom made furnishings using natural fabrics and fibres.

In prioritising sustainability, San Montano has increased its focus on drought resistant greenery and the reintroduction of native Mediterranean vegetation, enhancing the natural beauty of the property while aiding in a more balanced microclimate.

Among the most anticipated additions for 2025 is the Lighthouse Suite, a two-bedroom villa that accommodates up to six guests housed in a former military lighthouse perched at the highest point of the resort.

The villa features a 90m2 glass-enclosed living space with a retractable roof which merges indoor & outdoor living, as well as a fully equipped kitchen and beautifully appointed lounge that are complemented by 360-degree views of the Tyrrhenian Sea.

Blending traditional Neapolitan elements with modern elegance, the Lighthouse Suite’s interiors feature custom-designed furniture, artisan-crafted ceramics & artworks and a rich palette of natural materials.

The suite also features a repurposed 1940s military warehouse guestroom, where a circular bathroom showcases original portholes that frame mesmerising sea views. Outside, a private garden is completed with a plunge pool and shaded by olive & lemon trees.

San Montano, built directly over the island’s famed thermal springs, also features 11 outdoor thermal pools, four dining and drinking venues, a spa specialising in volcanic mud and healing waters, a beach club, two private speedboats and seven acres of lush parkland.

The property’s renovation will further enhance the hotel’s experience, inviting guests to immerse themselves in Ischia’s rich natural beauty.
