Studio Moren transforms Georgian townhouses into boutique hotel

Studio Moren has transformed three historic Georgian townhouses in Bloomsbury into Bertrand’s Townhouse, a 43-key luxury boutique hotel slated to open in in Winter 2025/26.

Named after Bertrand Russell, third Earl Russell, the hotel is full of character and whimsy, synonymous with Bertie’s mischievous nature, sharp wit and inimitable sense of humour.

Interiors thoughtfully honour Russell and his wider circle of English artists, writers and intellectuals who lived and worked in the Bloomsbury area in the early 20th century.

The result is a combination of thoughtful design touches; statement woodwork and marble touches showcase exceptional craftsmanship, while a colour palette of rich ochres, vibrant reds and deep indigo blues flows throughout.

Much like the colourful personalities who once called Bedford Place home, each of Bertrand’s Townhouse’s 43 guestrooms exude character and charm. Heritage fixtures such as original cornicing and decorative fireplaces celebrate the building’s storied beginnings, while bold colours and prints, natural wood touches, brass furnishings and unique artwork create cosy sanctuaries for modern day creative spirits. Elegant en-suite bathrooms feature rainfall showers and Diptyque amenities, while select suites also offer freestanding bathtubs.

At the heart of the hotel is Ottie’s Salon, a tribute to the Bloomsbury Set’s legendary gatherings that attracted the finest minds of the era. By day, the lounge serves a relaxed all-day dining menu, before transforming into an intimate speakeasy, complete with jazz music and old-world cocktails.

Inspired by Russell’s well-documented appreciation for tobacco, The Cigar Garden is an elegant outdoor terrace, blending natural materials such as weathered stone and rich woods, textured botanical patterns and plenty of natural greenery and verdant plantings. Vintage trolley stations house aged spirits, fine whiskies and a curated selection of cigars.
