Montcalm East, an Autograph Collection Hotel in Shoreditch

Montcalm East sets Spring 2021 opening date

Montcalm East is set to open in Shoreditch this Spring as part of Marriott’s Autograph Collection. Situated just a short stroll from Old Street, the 288-room hotel features a futuristic façade influenced by the work of ‘Op-Art’ pioneer Bridget Riley, which acts as an optical illusion and sets the tone for the experience.

Inside, Shoreditch-based studio Blacksheep has drawn inspiration from the pioneering heritage of the area and the different perspectives that have shaped it. Geometric patterns and muted colour tones create clean and calming public spaces, while guestrooms are flooded with natural light and many offer floor-to-ceiling city views. Providing pops of colour, bespoke artwork in the rooms is a play on the trademark street art posters of the district. Elsewhere, bathrooms feature rain showers and ethical products by The Soap Co. – a local brand that employs, trains and supports people with disabilities to build skills and independence.

Leading the F&B design meanwhile is independent pub and bar group Barworks, who will take cues from the locale to create informal restaurant and bar Moor & Mead. Deeply rooted in the area, the venue’s name blends the Moor from local institutions such as Moorfields Eye Hospital with the Mead from its breweries.

Keeping guests inspired will be a series of cultural events and partnerships; the hotel will pay homage to the old school point-and-shoot style photography at its very own PhotoLab, where patrons can become creators themselves by capturing unique moments on film before developing them to take as a parting gift.

Art curators Culture A have also been commissioned for a selection pieces that focus on East London and emerging talent, while a partnership with Proud Galleries will see the mezzanine level adorned with works by acclaimed photographers who continue to capture iconic figures, moments and trends defining pop culture.
