Room Mate Hotels opens fifth Barcelona property

Hotel Room Mate Gerard, a collaboration between Room Mate Hotels and Jaime Beriestain Studio, has opened its doors in Barcelona’s Ensanche district. Comprising 66 guestrooms divided into three categories – Basic, Standard and Deluxe – the property is located steps from Paseo de Sant Joan and emblematic modernist building Casa Burés. The opening marks the fifth Room Mate branded hotel in the city.

“It’s an emerging area that breathes creativity, avant-garde and design, values that are perfectly identified with the Room Mate Gerard hotel,” says Beriestain.

Working to create a masculine hotel, both comfortable and informal, Beriestain’s design incorporates architectural and sculptural concepts alongside rough materials including concrete, terrazzo and wood. Elsewhere, a sophisticated lighting scheme throughout creates interplays between light and shadow, an element enhanced by a colour palette of predominantly black ink.

”This is the first time that I’ve worked with rough materials, and it has allowed me to discover a new way of designing,” Beriestain continues. “I had an immediate connection with (Room Mate founder and owner) Kike Sarasola. We share an interest in innovation, surprise and originality in this project. Together we went out looking for objects and toured the galleries of Barcelona to find the best artwork. The presence of works of art in an interior reflects the personality of the owner and brings a lot of character. Art is an indispensable element in my projects.”
