Nirjhara, a family-owned sustainable boutique retreat, is set to open on Bali’s southwest coast in 2021.

Named after the cascading Nirjhara waterfall, the property features 25 suites and villas, including seven treehouse Canopy suites that offer views of the waterfall, river, jungle or rice paddy. The Residence, a two-storey, two-bedroom villa with floor-to-ceiling windows offers guests a private haven amidst the jungle.

The dedication to sustainability is evident across the resort; from upcycled materials used in construction to an onsite water purification facility providing guests with drinking water in recycled glass bottles. Suites are also insulated to minimise the use of air conditioning, whilst hot water is heated by solar panels.

In line with the project’s sustainability pledge, each living space has been constructed to have as little environmental impact as possible. Exteriors use reclaimed hevea wood, natural stone and traditional sirap roofing.

Meanwhile the interiors – featuring an earthy colour palette – celebrate Indonesian design with traditional woven furniture handcrafted by local artisans, coconut panelling and wood carving and contemporary art from rising local artists.

At the heart of the F&B offering is Ambu, Nirjhara’s casual chic restaurant serving a modern take on Bali’s rich and eclectic gastronomic heritage. As part of its ‘slow food’ approach to dining, 95 per cent of ingredients are sourced from the hotel’s own vegetable garden, neighbouring farms and trusted local suppliers.

The project also boasts a spa celebrating age-old healing practices and rituals. Treatments on offer include sound healing, reiki, massages, body scrubs and reflexology. The Retreat at Nirjhara features four treatment rooms centred around a reflection pool, two Finnish saunas, a fully-equipped fitness centre and The Shala – a riverside bamboo-clad yoga pavilion designed by eco-architects Ibuku.

Coming later next year is Vela, Nirjhara’s six-cabin traditional sailing yacht available for private charter.
