Westin announces Darwin waterfront hotel

Westin Hotels & Resorts has been granted planning consent for an AUD$200 million hotel on the Darwin waterfront, slated to open in 2021. Designed by the Melbourne and Sydney-based Bates Smart architectural firm, and featuring amenities including an infinity pool, a series of high-ceiling event spaces and a rooftop garden, The Westin Darwin Hotel will seek to provide an important gateway between the city of Darwin, the ocean, and the natural wonders of the Northern Territory.

“Our intention is for the hotel to embody the spirit of Darwin, the land and nature and to create an identity that is uniquely connected to the Northern Territory,” explains Cian Davis, Studio Director, Bates Smart.

Informed by a study of the geographic history of the site, its context and climate requirements, the project will feature a curved form referencing the layered past of the waterfront. The lower levels are inspired by nearby rock formations, and mimic the landscape through the incorporation of natural stone, landscaping and water features. Public areas, verandas ad breezeways respond to the tropical environment whilst referencing heritage buildings within Darwin. Elsewhere, the upper levels draw influence from tree canopies, with dark metal and timber screens creating dappled patterns of light and providing shade cover. The design further incorporates a seawall, protecting the hotel from any significant weather events whilst doubling as a pedestrian path and community waterfront access.

Interiors will feature a natural palette with soft tonal textured finishes and refined furnishings, whilst an exterior restaurant and bar will serve up authentic Northern Territory dining. Topping the project, the rooftop garden will offer additional restaurant facilities, and can be access via a skywalk from Goyder Park.
